Yup! The fever is in full swing here in Toronto, and man! Is everyone catching it! Even my hospital has an official World Cup betting pool... only instead of winning money, you win points with each correct guess on which team will win on each round... the one who earns the most points will get a chance to win glorious prime tickets (or season tickets... I forgot) to catch the Toronto FC and other wonderful soccer memorabilia.
I stumbled upon this article too... regarding who will Canada cheer for in the first round with USA vs. England
Maaaaan... the person writing this article obviously have no concept of Canadian demographics. Well at least very little knowledge about the very diverse yet very British-influenced Ontario, where soccer and the World Cup reverbrates the loudest in the country. After all, Toronto is the only city in Canada that has a professional soccer team. (The provinces that have soccer representation in the Canadian National level are only Ontario, Quebec and a random team from British Columbia... the praire brothers are too busy playing hockey).
So in this Ontarian's POV, will Canada be cheering for Bro or
The answer is... neither.
Because Canada's National Team keeps getting their ass kicked and can't qualify to the World Cup, this nation of many nations pledge allegiance to the many nations its peoples originally come from. I mentioned this in the old forum... the World Cup signals a huge non-stop party in Toronto regardless of which team wins a match. To parapharase my friend's world cup experience...
If Brazil wins... Brazilian-Canadians flood St. Clair and Yonge Street to have a great big street party and cars zip around honking horns and waving Brazil's flag in celebration
If Italy wins... Italian-Canadians flood St. Clair and Yonge Street to have a great big street party and cars zip around honking horns and waving Italy's flag in celebration
If Portugal wins... Portuguese-Canadians flood St. Clair and Yonge Street to have a great big street party and cars zip around honking horns and waving Portugal's flag in celebration
If Great Britain wins... a white guy with the Union Flag strapped to his back rides down the St. Clair St on a bicycle.
So much for supporting Daddy. (>_<)
Of course, with France qualifying this year (despite how questionable and may I add... unfair), I'm sure the French-Canadians will be cheering Papa on! Right?
Oh... and if USA wins? I really dunno... I've never actually witnessed a USA win celebration in Canada... to be quite honest. Well, we'll probably hold out a toast to Bro in a local Fox and Fiddle pub, where many of us watch the Maple Leaf clock that countdown how many more days, hours, minutes and seconds before hockey season starts again...
